The Metric System was first developed in France by Gabriel Mouton in the 1670s. He was actually a vicar in a church in Lyon. It is a system of weights and measures based on the decimal system. This makes it easier to do calculations. This is why the metric system is generally used in science. It was first adopted in France in 1795.
