Should Carpet Be Removed for Interior Wall?

Question: I am planning on adding an interior wall to a room with existing carpeting. In framing out the wall, do I need to cut through the carpet and set the plate on the foundation?

Answer: It would be a good idea to remove the carpeting where the wall meets the floor. This will avoid problems later if the carpet ever needs to be removed. Also the connection between wall and floor will be more stable if the carpet and padding are not there. You can probably accomplish this pretty easily by using a 2X4 as a guide and, using a sharp utility knife, removing the carpet. If the carpet has been glued to the floor, use a heat gun to help pull it up.
