How to Make Ice Cream at Home

There is something very special about making ice cream at home. Sure, the ice cream that can be bought at the supermarket is delicious, but nothing can compare to homemade ice cream made to your own favorite recipe. It is not difficult to make, and it can provide a fun activity for the entire family!

There are many different ways to make ice cream at home. One way is so simple that all that is needed is a few ingredients and a baggie!

To make ice cream in a baggie:


  1. Add the sugar, milk, heavy cream, and vanilla to the quart-sized baggie.
  2. Seal the bag. Double-check this so that the ingredients do not go everywhere.
  3. Put the ice into the 1 gallon sized baggie.
  4. Add the salt to the 1 gallon sized baggie.
  5. Put the quart-sized baggie into the gallon sized baggie (be sure it is sealed).
  6. Seal the gallon sized baggie once the smaller one is inside.
  7. Sway the bag back and forth. Hold it with a barrier such as a dishtowel or gloves to keep your hands from getting cold. Continue this process for 15 to 20 minutes.
  8. When the contents of the quart bag appear to be like ice cream. Open up the bags, scoop out the ice cream, and enjoy!

The baggie method is labor intensive because it is fully manual. While it can be a lot of fun, many people prefer to use an ice cream maker. An ice cream maker is a more hands-off approach that can produce even better results.

There are many different ice cream recipes floating around the internet. It is easy to find one that will be delicious. This is an example of one of the many that can be made with an ice cream maker.


  1. Pour the milk into a pan.
  2. Bring it to a boil.
  3. Place the vanilla pod in the pan and let it soak for 20 minutes.
  4. Put the egg yolks and sugar in a bowl.
  5. Beat them until they are completely mixed together.
  6. Scrape the vanilla seeds and add them to the milk.
  7. Pour the milk into the egg yolk and sugar mixture.
  8. Stir all of the ingredients together.
  9. Pour all of the mixture back into the pot and heat it until it becomes thick. (Be sure that it is not boiling.)
  10. Let it all cool.
  11. When the mixture has cooled it is time to stir in the heavy cream.
  12. Put all of the mixture into an ice cream maker. These all have different instructions, so be sure to consult the manual that came with the machine.

Learning how to make ice cream at home is a lot of fun. There are many different recipes and methods. Whatever recipe is used, enjoying homemade ice cream is a treat for the whole family.
