Street Sweeper

A street sweeper is a big truck that cleans the street. (At least now it is.) Before they invented mechanical street sweepers they had people clean the streets instead. The back of the street sweeper where all the stuff is kept is called a hopper.

There are three main kinds of street sweepers. They are mechanical street sweepers, street sweepers with vacuums, and regenerative-air street sweepers. Mechanical street sweepers, and street sweepers with vacuums have many rotating brushes which sweep all sorts of stuff. It does this after it sprays a bit of water. After doing this the street sweepers with vacuums suck up all the loose stuff. Regenerative-air street sweepers blow air on the street, then vacuum the stuff into the hopper.

The first street sweeper was invented by John Murphy. He made it in 1904 in Elgin Illinois.

Sometimes there are no parking signs that say stuff like " no parking from 7:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M." They do this so street sweepers can get through. At one time people thought that street sweepers remove storm water pollutants. Some studies say that this is not true.
