At its founding in 1857, Atlantic Magazine's charter was to bring to its readers the best in "literature, politics, science and the arts." For nearly 150 years it has managed to do just that. Among its founders were the greatest American writers of the 19th century, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and its famous first editor, James Rusell Lowell.
