Miscellany

A miscellany is a conglomeration of various, unrelated odds and ends. Generally, it is used to apply to items that do not fit neatly into any category. A platypus then, might be thought of as a miscellaneous creature, if it were not forcefully crammed in among the mammals. In English usage, the word goes at least back to 1615. It seems to have been borrowed from the French miscellanées1.

Yet Miscellaneous is a word that must be used in context. At InDepthInfo, we have a miscellany for topics that don't fall within our usual categories. For example Epictetus was a great stoic philosopher. On a website about stoic philosophy, he would not be miscellaneous, he would be the main subject. Nevertheless here we have a history of the life of this great philosopher along with general observations on his significance. Making him perhaps less miscellaneous, we have also done an analysis of the first Book of Epictetus.

One of the most recognized authors of the 20th Century was J.R.R. Tolkien. He was the author of "Lord of the Rings". A short biography helps to make sense of his life, times, and works.

Rayment's Learn to Read Method is an explanation of how W.J. Rayment taught his daughter to read by the time she was three years old. Though it is written, tongue-in-cheek, as a sales pitch for a reading method it is effective. The method is free, by the way.
