Green Policies Starve Africa
It is a fact that science has developed technologies to solve many problems. Universities have created genetically modified foods which resist drought, disease and actually improve nutrition. Poor, subsistence farmers could improve their lot and the health of millions if only they were allowed to plant these crops. But their governments are pressured to resist these trends by environmental lobbies.
Environmental groups strive mightily to resist the use of genetically modified crops in the Third-World, spending millions to disseminate disinformation. Their main objection is that the seed and pollen of these crops might upset the balance of nature where they are planted. Some even go so far as to claim that such crops would be harmful for human consumption. Environmentalists make these claims even in the teeth of extensive testing in American Universities that belie their opinions.
Amazingly, Environmentalists even resist food aid from the United States to Third-World countries. Paul Driessen, in his book, "Eco-Imperialism: Green Power - Black Death", illustrates a salient case. "The US had shipped 26,000 tons of corn to Zambia, where many people were down to one small meal per day, only to have the grain sit in storage...Some of the corn had been genetically modified, to make it resistant to insect pests, reduce the need for pesticides, and increase crop yields without having to put more land under cultivation." The president of Zambia had been pressured by Greenpeace and EU diplomats not to accept the corn because of its possible toxicity. "The fact that Americans have been consuming this corn for years did not change (the President's) decision."
Millions were left to starve because of the unscientific bias of a few relatively wealthy environmentalists. The case in Zambia is not an isolated one. Such blatant disregard for human life to promote the Eco-environmental agenda is common throughout the Third World.
