Tomatoes are both healthy and tasty. Because they come from the nightshade family, they were once thought to be poisonous. They did not become popular in the United States until the 1820s when a public demonstration by Colonel Robert Johnson showed they could be consumed with impunity. Today, tomatoes are the most commonly grown and consumed vegetable in the world. Tomatoes can be found in a large variety of dishes in multiple forms.

Tomatoes are eaten fresh in salads, chopped into salsas, pickled, fried (green or red), placed on sandwiches, and eaten as an hors d'oeuvres with a dip. And this is just fresh tomatoes. They are also canned for use in soups and stews, pureed for soup, made into sauces for pasta, and even enjoy great popularity as the main ingredient in that versatile condiment, catsup (or ketchup).

Tomatoes seem to have an affinity for specific spices. This may be simply because humans have become accustomed to certain tastes. However, when concocting recipes most chefs rely heavily on herbs such as basil, cilantro, and oregano. Garlic is also a common spice for use with tomatoes.

Even though tomatoes are biologically a fruit, they are treated as a vegetable for culinary purposes. They are seldom considered as a topping for ice cream. They are more commonly used to mix with pasta or rice.
