Pasta Machine at Work

Pasta is a very beloved dish in many cultures. It is easy to make and adds great nutritional value to our meals. We can thank the Italians for introducing the world to this wonderful food!

One reason so many people enjoy pasta is because it is such a flexible dish. It can be eaten with a variety of sauces and as a complement to many foods. The true pasta lover will want to learn how to make his or her own pasta dough. Because of its convenience, mass manufactured pasta has become very popular. However, there is a trend back toward homemade pasta. Homemade pasta dough has a flavor and freshness that is impossible to get from a box.

Before making homemade pasta dough, a cook will want to figure out how many people will be served. Most dough recipes are configured to make enough pasta to serve four to six people. Of course, the recipe can be adjusted according to need.

The budding pasta chef should first gather materials. The following list should prove sufficient for an average sized batch of homemade pasta:

Follow the directions below:

  1. Create a pile of flour, leaving an empty space in the middle.
  2. Crack eggs open and pour them into the hole that is in the middle of the flour.
  3. Pour some salt (as desired) on the flour as well.
  4. Use a fork to mix the ingredients together evenly.
  5. Next, knead the flour, eggs, and salt together so that there is a nice, smooth dough. If the dough seems a bit dry, add a very small amount of water to moisten it.
  6. Knead the dough for about ten or fifteen minutes until it is stretchy and firm. Make sure to get any lumps out.
  7. Then separate the dough into two pieces.
  8. Sprinkle flour on work surfaces so that the dough does not stick to countertop.
  9. Begin to roll out dough. Start from the middle, and turn it over every once in a while. Add more flour when the dough begins to stick to the surface.
  10. Continue to roll until homemade pasta dough is very thin (thinner than a dime). The reason it should be thin is that the dough will become twice as thick when it is cooked.
  11. When pasta dough is thin enough, cut it into the size pieces prefered. Use a cookie cutter if appropriate.
  12. Once pasta is in the desired form, start cooking!
  13. Boil water in a pot and add salt to taste.
  14. Place the pasta in the boiling water and cook for about three to five minutes, or until the noodles rise to the top.
  15. Be very careful not to overcook the pasta, or it will ruin the consistency.

It is important to note that the process of flattening your pasta into sheets can be done a lot faster with a pasta machine. These machines can also cut pasta into the desired shape. If making homemade pasta frequently, a pasta machine may be a worthwhile investment.

Making homemade pasta requires some practice, but it is well worth the effort. So many people enjoy the recipes the Italians have shared with us, and pasta is a tradition that many people enjoy. Take some time to make your own pasta instead of just buying the store brand. Your family will thank you for your hard work and delicious homemade pasta!
